Werger Galerie This GiclČe print has been expertly reproduced from an original 19th century wonderful luminist oil on canvas painting attributed to Scottish born Edmund Thornton Crawford, RSA (1806-1885). Original oil on canvas, Daybreak At The Bass, has been in private collection for over one-hundred years. In his youth, Edmund Thornton Crawford initially apprenticed to an artisan painter for several years. Later he studied at the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh under Andrew Wilson. Immersed in this instructor's tutelage, he concentrated on seascapes, harbors, landscapes and shipping scenes. In 1831, Crawford made the first of many visits to Holland to study the 17th century Dutch masters. Among these holding interest for Crawford were Dutch marine painters and landscapists. Particularly Willem van de Velde, the Elder (1611 - 1693) and Willem van de Velde, the Younger (1633 - 1707) -- the latter being the most influential in his developing career. In this work, Crawford's depiction offer views of times past: fishermen tending nets, boats then employed, and the Bass Rock itself looking east from waters on the west side of the island. Vertical cliffs materialize through the early morning mist, and together with the sun just barely in view rising from over the North Sea . . . all put a magical tone to the composition. Historical profile of the Bass Rock, its use over time and place in Scottish history, is included with each print. |
