Chris Greaves A native of Madison, Connecticut, Chris Greaves lives with his wife and their two children in a quaint Victorian beach cottage. Weekdays are spent overseeing operations at Greaves Corporation, a privately-held manufacturer of electrical connectors. An engineer by training, Chris is a master of many disciplines. An avid sailor, painter, manufacturer, antique vehicle collector/restorer, the list goes on. Steam cars and steamboats are a particular passion. Chris says, "More important than the painting and drawing techniques I was taught growing up was the training to look at a subject and really see it. This was the true artistic gift from my mom, who was a professional floral textile designer." A college art minor further honed Chris' skills. Chris is driven to create. Sometimes it's a steam car project, or producing and acting in a full-length motion picture, but frequently the creative urge is to paint. Not surprisingly, many of his subjects depict steamships. "The Big Stick", a recently completed work now available as a limited edition, is a depiction of the 1906 Battleship "Connecticut" plowing toward the viewer at great speed while firing its eight-inch guns to port. This maneuver, known as "Crossing the T," was an answer to poor early range finder technology. The "Connecticut," flagship of Theodore Roosevelt's Great White Fleet, was his tool to demonstrate American muscle to all the world: "walk soflty and carry a......" Extensive research, imagination and a little magic go into all that Chris touches. |
